Family Values Resource Institute • Literacy Program and Adult Education

The Enrollment Process

What are the requirements for entering the program?

To enter the program without a waiver, you must be an adult 18-years-old or older who does not have a high school diploma. (For those who are 16 or 17, please see the question below.) You need to be committed to the program and have the desire to earn the GED diploma.

Is there a waiting list?

There is waiting list to enter the Scotlandville Adult Learning Center. It is usually between 2 and 3 weeks long. If you can wait that long, you will be contacted when a space becomes available and your name becomes the next on the list. If you do not want to wait that long, it is advised that you inquire about the other adult education programs.

Are you the only Adult Education Center in the area?

There are other EBR Adult Education Centers in the Baton Rouge area. One may be closer to your home. A list of the programs sponsored by the EBR Public School system can be found on Adult Education Learning Centers website. For more information in general about East Baton Rouge Parish School System's adult education program, please visit EBR's Adult & Continuing Education website.

Are there different requirements if I am under the age of 18?

Yes, there are different requirements for students who are 16 and 17-years-old, and these requirements are due to laws established by the State of Louisiana. If you are 16 or 17 years of age, you must have a waiver form signed before entering an Adult Learning Center. Afterwards, you are required by law to come and participate at SALC a minimum of 15 hours per week in order to remain enrolled. Failure to do so could result in being turned over to the Child Welfare and Attendance Office (Truancy Department.)

Every 16 and 17-year-old student must have a waiver signed by the school board office before being allowed to attend Adult Education. You can obtain the waiver form from the counselor at your school or print it from the Louisiana Community and Technical College System's Student Eligibility Requirements/Forms for Adult Education and GED Testing website. Once you have filled out your part of the form, it must be taken to the school board office at 1050 S. Foster Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70806, PH 225.922.5400 and dropped off. The officials at the school board will review and sign it. It will then be forwarded to the Adult & Continuing Education office, at which time the parent and student will be called in for orientation. It is at the orientation that the choice of centers will be made.

What are the program procedures after enrolling?

At SALC we are committed to making sure that everyone receives the instruction necessary in order to be successful on the GED test. Because of this, we expect that our adults over the age of 18 come to the Center a minimum of 10 hours per week for instruction. (For those who are 16 and 17, please see the question above.)
