TABE Test Information

What is the TABE test?

The TABE test is a test that is used in many adult and vocational learning programs, including SALC. It stands for "Test of Adult Basic Education." At SALC it is used to determine where you are academically when you enter the program. Based upon your results, a program of study will be created specifically for you so that you can progress through the program as efficiently as possible.

How is the TABE test set up?

The test is a series of multiple choice questions. It covers three major areas: Reading, Langauge, and Mathematics (applied and computation). There is no writing assignments or short answers.

Can I fail the TABE test?

No, you cannot fail the test. The test simply shows where you are in each of the three areas tested, since you may be at different levels in each. This is a great benefit for you because you will not have to devote valuable class time to skills that you have already mastered.

Does SALC only use the TABE test as an entrance assessment or will I take it again later in the program?

After you take the test to determine your placement, your instructor will score it. He will have you first begin work on the section that you scored the lowest. After you complete the assignments for that content area, he will then have you take that individual section of the test again. This will help you, and him, to determine if your scores and skills have increased. Depending on your performance on the entrance TABE test, you may then have to complete assignments and other sections of the TABE test as well.
