Why should I consider donating to a GED program?
There are many reasons why a GED program is a worthy donation. Perhaps there is no greater gift to give someone than education. Doors are opened that previously were closed to them. While the old saying may sound cliché, it still rings true. “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.”
Besides the obvious benefits that a GED gives to an individual, it also benefits the local community and the state of Louisiana. For every level of education that a person obtains, their career opportunities expand and then their economic power grows. As a consequence, the same happens to the economic power of their local community and state. During these rough economic times, a boost for any of our Louisiana citizens is a boost for the entire state.
Why should I consider donating to this particular GED program?
The Scotlandville Adult Learning Center is part of a larger organization called Family Values Resource Institute, Inc. (FVRI) which has a vision of becoming a "one-stop shop" for the North Baton Rouge community. Recognizing that people often have several situations that hold them back from reaching their highest potential, FVRI is striving to create several programs that could assist residents in multiple aspects of their lives. (Please refer to our Family Empowerment Center page for further information.) Work such as this requires a great deal of resources but is well worth it in the end.
What types of donations are needed?
There are several ways to donate to SALC. These include:
- Scholarships
- Often, people cannot afford the $50.00 fee to take the GED test. Scholarships would help many people to be able to take the test.
- Wish List
- For a list of current supplies needed by SALC, please go to our Wish List webpage.
- Volunteer
- Volunteers would be greatly appreciated. We specifically need Literacy/GED tutors who can assist students with basic math concepts, reading comprehension, and/or writing. Tutoring hours are available Monday - Friday from 8:30AM - 12:30PM. Tutors are welcome to stay for an hour or more during these time periods.
